Cromwell's daughter imploring him to clemency for the life of Charles I
In this domestic interior Oliver Cromwell is depicted standing over his daughter who is kneeling at his feet, with her back to the viewer. Wearing a plumed hat and a leather jerkin, Cromwell stares out of the window and is half-obscured by shadows. By contrast, his daughter is shrouded in light streaming through the window. Dressed in white, she looks angelic as she pleads for mercy on behalf of Charles I who is on trial for treason.
Some time during the 1620s Cromwell married Elizabeth Bourchier, the daughter of a retired London merchant, and she bore him nine children: five boys and four girls - Bridget, Elizabeth, Mary and Frances. The woman depicted here is likely to be one of his two eldest daughters - Bridget or Elizabeth - whose appeals to her father are to no avail.
