Paintings, Prints & Drawings — C. 1801-1900
Oliver Cromwell
Oliver Cromwell is portrayed here at bust-length. His face is seen in profile, partly concealed by shadows. The painting is after an unfinished miniature portrait of Cromwell sketched from life by Samuel Cooper. A number of replicas after Cooper's miniature exist.
Following the execution of Charles I in 1649, Cromwell was promoted to the status of Lord Protector of Great Britain. Frequently depicted during the 17th century, he is reported to have said to commissioned artists: 'I desire you would use all your skill to paint my picture truly like me ... warts and everything.' By the 19th century, Cromwell's image was very familiar. In this portrait, he is depicted wearing the armour and plain collar characteristic of other likenesses of him.
