Cromwell gazing at the body of Charles I
Reduced version of Delaroche's salon painting of 1833. Cromwell standing over the coffin of the recently executed Charles I (with his head sewn back on), lifting the lid to gaze at the corpse. The room is richly decorated with brocade drapes, heavy, velvet upholstered chairs on which the coffin is supported and an ornate fireplace. The first print after this painting was Louis Pierre Henrique Dupont (1833). See Stephen Bann, History Painted 1997), p. 111.
