Illustrated catalogue sheet advertising clothing accessories stocked and sold by Foster, Porter & Co. located at 47 Wood Street. Each illustration represents a different department of the business. Thus the illustration of gloves represents the 'haberdashery department', an illustration of a shirt represents the 'hosiery department'. Britain's most important centre for wholesale textiles was the area around Wood Street in the City of London, close to the present location of the Museum of London. Here, in enormous warehouses, all manner of textiles were stored and sold - lace, cottons, silks, woollens, ribbons. London's 'warehousemen' or wholesalers controlled production centres in the Midlands and the North. Firms such as Foster, Porter & Co., major hosiery and glove wholesalers, sold goods to retailers and exporters.
