The Black Spread Eagle
This trade token, worth a farthing, was issued for a business at the sign of the Black Spreadeagle, in Turnmill Street, Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 3239; Obv inscription: THE.BLACK.SPRED.EAGEL (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A spread eagle (in field); Rev inscription: IN.TVRNE.MILL.STREET (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = H.A.B. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).
Turnmill Street lay in Clerkenwell, Middlesex; the area is now part of the London Borough of Islington.
