The Prince of Wales Feathers
John Hatten issued this trade token, worth a farthing, for his business at the sign of the Three Feathers, in Russell Street, Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 2433; Obv inscription: IOHN.HATTEN (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = The Prince of Wales feathers (in field); Rev inscription: IN.RVSELL.STREETE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = I.D.H. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).
"Mr John Hatton" is named in the poor-rate assessment books of St Paul's, Covent Garden, 1651, 1659 and 1663. His house is particularized "on the north side of Russell Street", see J. H. Burn, A Descriptive Catalogue of the London Traders, Tavern, and Coffee-house Tokens current in the Seventeenth Century, presented to the Corporation Library by Henry Benjamin Hanbury Beaufoy, 2nd ed. (London, 1855), no. 973. Russell Street, runs east off Covent Garden in the City of Westminster, having formerly been in Westminster, Middlesex.
