The Apothecaries' Arms
Philip Wetherell issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business in Great Queen Street, Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 1267; Obv inscription: PHILIP.WETHERELL.IN (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = The Apothecaries' arms (in field); Rev inscription: GREAT.QVEEN.STREET.69 (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALF / PENY / P.M.W. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).
The arms of the Worshipful Company of Apothecaries are: Azure, Apollo, the inventor of physic, proper with his head radiant holding in his left hand a bow and in his right hand an arrow, or supplanting a serpent argent (J. Bromley, The Armorial Bearings of the Guilds of London: a record of the heraldry of the surviving companies with historical notes; with...[illustrations] by Heather Child...(London, 1960). Great Queen Street, is in the London Borough of Camden, having formerly been part of Middlesex.
