Ann Kanes, a milliner (hat maker), issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for her business in St James' Market (now Waterloo Place and environs), Westminster, Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 2537; Obv inscription: ANN.KANES.IN.ST.IAMES (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A.K and floral device (initials in Roman capitals, either side of device, in field); Rev inscription: MARKETT.MILLINER.1667 (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HER / HALFE / PENNY (in three lines of Roman capitals, in field).
St James' Market, lay on St James' Fields, in Westminster, Middlesex; the area now forms Waterloo Place and its environs, to the north east of Pall Mall, in the City of Westminster.
