The Rose and Crown
Burbage Salter, a grocer, issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business at the sign of the Rose and Crown, in St James' Market (now Waterloo Place and environs), Westminster, Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 2545; Obv inscription: BVRBAGE.SALTER.GROCER.AT.YE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A rose and crown (in field); Rev inscription: IN.ST.IAMESES.MARKETT (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALFE / PENY (in three lines of Roman capitals, in field).
St James' Market, lay on St James' Fields, in Westminster, Middlesex; the area now forms Waterloo Place and its environs, to the north east of Pall Mall, in the City of Westminster.
