The Green Man
Sarah Austin issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for her business at the sign of the Green Man, in St James' Market (now Waterloo Place and environs), Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 2528; Obv inscription: SARAH. AVSTIN. AT. THE. GREEN (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A hairy man holding a club (in field); Rev inscription: MAN. IN. ST. IAMES. MARKET. PLACE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HER / HALFE / PENNY (in three lines of Roman capitals, in field).
