The Grocers' Arms
Nathaniel Harding, a grocer, issued this trade token, worth a farthing, for his business in the parish of St Giles in the Fields, Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 2494; Obv inscription: NAT.HARDING.GROSER (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = N.H (in field, in Roman capitals); Rev inscription: GILESES.IN.THE.FEILDS (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = The Grocers' arms (in field).
The arms of the Worshipful Company of Grocers are: Argent a chevron Gules between nine cloves Sable (J. Bromley, The Armorial Bearings of the Guilds of London: a record of the heraldry of the surviving companies with historical notes; with...[illustrations] by Heather Child...(London, 1960). St Giles in the Fields was a parish in Holborn, Middlesex; it now lies in the London Borough of Camden.
