The Tobacco Roll
Richard Chidley issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business in Clement Lane (now Clement's Lane), Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 2452; Obv inscription: RICH.CHIDLEY.IN.CLEMENT (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A tobacco roll R.R.C. (triad of initials in Roman capitals around sign, in field); Rev inscription: LANE.NEARE.NEW.MARKETT (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALFE / PENNY / 1666 (in four lines of Roman capitals, in field).
