Printed Ephemera — 1842
Poster for the Rosherville Gardens, Gravesend
The Rosherville Gardens were popular Victorian pleasure gardens in Gravesend. They featured a lake, a terrace, flower beds, statues, a bear pit and intricate winding pathways. The gardens were established on land owned by Joseph Rosher and were created from a disused chalk pit by businessman George Jones. Visitors arrived at the gardens by steam ship and were entertained by singers, dancers and archers as well as watching spectacles such as the display of illuminated lamps advertised on this poster.
