Bacchus
Marble statue of a torso, possibly of Bacchus, made from fine-grained marble. Found on the south side of the narthex (entrance area) of the Roman Temple of Mithras, Walbrook, London, 23 September 1954.
The statue had been deliberately broken so that only the lower stomach, groin and upper legs survived. It depicts a nude young man, resting his weight on his right leg in a relaxed pose. The front and sides of the statue are burnished and well-preserved. The back is finished but not burnished. The figure is very probably that of Bacchus.
