Paintings, Prints & Drawings — C. 1840
National Gallery, Trafalger Square, London
This vignette engraving depicts the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square which opened in 1834. This location between the fashionable West End and poorer East End, as well as free admittance, were intended to ensure that all social classes could enjoy the national collection. The three quotations on art collecting and appreciation by Joseph Addison, Alexander Pope and Dr Johnson inscribed beneath the image, however, uphold the eighteenth century view that only gentlemen of a refined taste could appreciate fine art.
