St Michael
Pilgrim badge of St Michael from the shrine at Mont-Saint-Michel in France. The cult of St Michael began on that site in the early 8th century after the saint appeared to the Bishop of Avranches in a dream and asked him to build a chapel in his honour on Mont Tombe, which later became known as Mont-Saint-Michel. St Michael was an archangel who led an army against Satan. This badge depicts the archangel standing on a dragon (Satan) and spearing it through the mouth. He has a halo around his head and wears a long, tight, patterned robe. His wings stand up straight from his shoulders.
