Social History — C. 1901-1984
Regalia, medal
This badge is in the shape of a Star of David and the inscription reads 'Berner Old Boys' Lodge No.102'. The influx of late 19th century Jewish migrants led to the founding of hundreds of community organisations like this one, offering social activities and mutual help. Members of friendly societies paid in a sum of money regularly, which they could draw on in times of need. In 1901, 22,000 people were members of London's 176 Jewish Friendly Societies.
