The Virgin Mary; Our Lady of Pity
Top of a pilgrim badge from the shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham at Walsingham Priory in Norfolk. This thin copper alloy badge depicts the priory’s image of Our Lady of Pity, known as the Pieta, which showed the Virgin Mary with Jesus Christ lying dead across her lap. Much of this badge is now missing but the top of the cross on which Christ was crucified can still be seen. When complete, the badge would have been hexagonal in shape. Thin copper alloy badges like this one were made around the end of the 15th century and the beginning of the 16th. They could be sewn onto a pilgrim’s clothes or hat, or stitched onto the pages of a prayer book.
