Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval; 15th century
Crucifix
Part of a pilgrim badge from an unknown shrine in the form of a crucifix. This fragment is part of one of the limbs of the cross and its terminal. The limb is covered with lines to show the grain of the wood. The terminal is decorated with a four-leaf clover and four trefoil crockets (one is missing) so that its looks as though the wood is bursting into life. Before the Reformation in the 16th century, every church had a large crucifix, known as a rood, on display. Some roods were associated with miracles and became the focus for pilgrimages.
