Black Prince
This funerary badge is probably a memento from the Black Prince's funeral at Canterbury Cathedral in 1376. It shows the prince in armour, kneeling at prayer before the Trinity (God the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost). On the ground behind him are his flag, helmet and personal emblem - the ostrich feather. Encircling this scene is a buckled garter - the emblem of the Order of the Garter founded in 1348 by Edward III. Returning triumphant from battles at Crécy and Calais, the Black Prince became one of the first knights of the Order. The inscription on the garter reads: 'the: trynyty [& seynt geor]g: be: at: our: ending:' ('the Trinity and St George be at our ending'). This badge is probably one of the earliest depictions of the emblem.
