A complete London lead cloth seal. One side has the legend '+SIGILLVM.PANNORVM' around a bearded, balding head with an upright sword to the side. The other side has the legend '+CIVITATIS:LONDONIAL'. Altogether the legends mean 'seals of the cloth of London' and the sword is that from the arms of the City of London. Cloth seals were used in a system of quality control for the textile industry. Cloths were examined for quality and a tax was paid to the king of a few pence per piece of cloth. Seals were then attached to the cloth to show they had been examined and the tax had been paid.
