Coin, sestertius
A copper alloy sestertius struck by Emperor Antoninius Pius, ruler of the Roman Empire, AD 138-161, to commemorate his deceased wife, Empress Faustina the Elder, c. AD 100-140. The back of the coin depicts Vesta, the Roman goddess of home and family. This coin was minted in Rome, Italy, AD 141.
Obv: Draped bust of Faustina I, facing right. Obv inscription: DIVA FAVSTINA. Rev: Venus, standing right, holding an apple in her left hand and gathering a drape of her veil in her right hand. Rev inscription: [CONSE]CRATIO, SC in field.
