Coin, dupondius
A copper alloy dupondius of Emperor Vespasian, ruler of the Roman Empire, AD 69-79. The back of the coin probably depicts Pax, the Roman goddess of peace. This coin may have been minted in Lugdunum (modern day Lyon, France), AD 72-73.
Obv: Radiate? head of Vespasian, facing right. Obv inscription: ...VESPASIAN AVG COS... . Rev: Pax? standing left, sacrificing from a patera (dish) held over an altar in her right hand and holding a branch and caduceus (a winged staff held by messengers and heralds) in the left? Rev inscription: (PAX AVG)?, SC in field.
