Coin, nummus AE4
A copper alloy nummus of Emperor Arcadius. Arcadius was given the title of Augustus by his father, Emperor Theodosius I, in AD 383. Upon Theodosius’ death he became Emperor of the Eastern Empire, AD 395-408. The back of the coin depicts Victoria, the Roman goddess of victory. This coin was minted in Arelate (modern day Arles, France), AD 388-392.
Obv: Draped, cuirassed and diademed bust of Arcadius, facing right. Obv inscription: DN ARCADIVS PF AVG. Rev: Victory, advancing left, holding a wreath in her right hand and a palm in the left. Rev inscription: VICTORIA [AVGGG], ...CON in exergue.
