Mortar
Light grey greisen. Four fragments of a large circular mortar, with four rectangular lugs (two remaining). The lugs protrude above the rim and there is a pronounced groove between the rim edge and the lug; the base of the lug sits below the external chamfer of the otherwise rounded rim. The sides of the vessel curve gently to the base.
The stone is a griesen, a form of altered granite, resulting from the emissions given off during the final stages of cooling. It occurs in many granitic areas of
Britain and Europe and this one has been shown by analysis to be from Cornwall. The mortar is classified as a Trethurgy bowl, a type first recorded from
excavations at Trethurgy (Miles and Miles 1973).
