Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval; 14th-15th century
Purse
Part of a secular badge or pendant in the form of an openwork purse. Purse badges may have been worn as lucky charms to encourage money and wealth to come to their wearers. This style of purse badge was most popular in the late 15th century. There is a complete example of this purse pendant in the Museum of London's Archaeological Archive which contains a coin (object number: BOY86[1679]<1322>).
The purse is decorated with a lattice pattern of openwork quatrefoils. Three circular roundels along the base of the purse are the remains of three tassels. The top half of the purse is missing, as is any contents it may have had. It was probably a pendant but as it is incomplete it is hard to be certain.
