Saxon & Medieval — Early Saxon-Middle Saxon; 6th-7th century
Spear, spearhead
Alongside other Saxon weapons, this spear was found in a marshy area of the Thames called 'Old England' in Brentford, west London, opposite Kew Gardens. It may have been deliberately thrown in the marsh during a religious ritual or it could have been a captured enemy weapon. This area was a key crossing point over the Thames and also over the River Brent: battles between the East Saxons of Essex and the West Saxons of Wessex could have been fought here.
