Mortar, basalt mortar
Black basalt (?); black, very dense stone. . Fragment from the base of a large circular mortar. The exterior has vertical tooling marks, with a narrow area of slanting marks forming a small foot at the base; deep, irregular tooling marks on the underside of the base, radiating from the centre; interior polished smooth and has surface scratches, possibly caused by wear, suggesting that the mortar was used for grinding.
