Saxon & Medieval — Middle Saxon; 9th century
Axe, battleaxe
Battleaxe with slightly curved blade and narrow stem. It has an oval shaft hole with grooves above and below the shaft hole on either face. There are traces of vertical grooves on each side of shaft hole. The Vikings favoured battle-axes as weapons. It was found in the Thames and may have been thrown in or lost during the battles against the Vikings that took place along the river.
