Saxon & Medieval — Medieval; 13th - 14th century
Case, mirror case
Copper alloy mirror case, made from two circular discs. The discs are decorated with cross made from a double line of punched triangles on each face. Each disc has a single and a double lug on either edge. One set of lugs formed the hinge and the other would have been tied shut with string or wire to keep the mirror case closed. The two discs have become detached. The glass for the mirror has not survived but it would have been held in place with a putty or line plaster. The mirror would have been convex to create a magnified image so it would be useful, depsite its small size.
This is a type A1 mirror case, based on its decorative style (see Medieval Archaeology, Volume 58 (2024), pg. 355-361).
