Saxon & Medieval — Saxo-Norman; 11th century
Comb
Composite bone hair comb, double sided and incomplete. The teeth have been cut out of a flat plate of horn and riveted between two bone side plates. The side plates have been notched at the edges due to the overcutting of the teeth. There are coarse teeth on one side and fine teeth on the other (though the fine teeth are mostly missing). To have properly combed hair was an important way of keeping yourself well-groomed, especially at a time when people did not wash their hair very often.
