Saxon & Medieval — C.1500; early 16th century
Liturgical vessel
Very little medieval church plate survives because it was lost, hidden or converted to other uses during the Reformation. Chalices were supposed to be made from precious metals or pewter, so it is possible that this brass vessel, with hexagonal stem and sexfoil base, was made for burial in a priest's coffin, a custom sometimes observed in the medieval period. The chalice was found in London Wall.
