Saxon & Medieval — Medieval; mid 13th-14th century
Jug, baluster jug
Kingston-ware cylindrical-necked baluster jug in the highly-decorated style. The decoration of flowers and stems uses various techniques. The flower petals are in applied red clay, with a central boss in the same clay as the body. The stems are applied strips of clay with rouletted decoration, with a copper wash so they show green under the clear glaze. There are also red blobs of clay with ring and dot decoration around the neck.
The jug was found on the site of Greyfriars Monastery in Newgate Street.
