Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval; early 14th century
Jug
Conical Kingston-type ware jug with 'anthropomorphic' decoration using applied strips and blobs of clay. Found in Bishopsgate Street in the City of London.
Jugs with faces were popular. Most of the potteries around London made them. They often show a man pulling his own beard, but here a bearded man is wringing his hands. We don't know what the decoration symbolises - perhaps it is a medieval joke or caricature that has been forgotten over time.
