Saxon & Medieval — Medieval; late 13th-early 14th century
Jug
Saintonge ware jug with polychrome decoration including shields and birds, found with A23357 at a site in Moorgate Street, City of London. Saintonge ware from southwest France was the most common of the imported pottery wares to come to London from Europe in this period. Wine traders from Bordeaux brought these vessels over from the late 1200s to the early 1300s. Tall jugs with 'parrot beak' spouts like this one were the most popular type.
