Shoe
Near complete adult size left foot ankle shoe in poor condition. It has a side latchet fastening, consisting of a flap with a single T-shaped leather toggle fastening still in situ. The upper and sole are joined by leather thonging. There are stitch holes around the mouth of the shoe for a top band or possibly a lining. There is a side seam, stitched with thread under the fastening flap. It is described by Frances Pritchard (1991, 216 and fig. 3.104) and dated by comparison to the ealry 11th century. Examples are also known from York dating mainly to the 10th century and from Norwich from a late 10th to early 11th century context (Mould et al, 2003, 3304-3305).
