Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval; 15th century
Shoe
Adult left foot ankle shoe with a pointed toe and a one-piece sole. The heel area is missing from the sole. The sole and rand have tunnel stitching for the attachment of clump (repair) soles. Most of the very wide rand is still in situ. The quarters are in two-pieces with a vertical centre back seam. The vamp is one-piece with diagonal side seams. The lace for the fastening is still in situ with two lace holes either side of the throat. There is also one lace hole in one side of the tongue insert which is still in situ in the throat. The heel stiffener is missing but the stitch holes for it can still be seen on the inner surface of the heel area. There is no evidence for a top band.
