Saxon & Medieval — Early Medieval; 12th century
Shoe, ankle shoe
Adult size ankle shoe (possibly for a right foot) with a rounded toe and a near complete upper; the sole is missing. A number of small inserts are missing from the ankle and throat area of the upper. The front of the vamp is decorated with a vertical stripe of three embroidered ridges. The fastening was with a drawstring (now missing) passing through a single row of two slots, one on either side of the instep.
