Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval; 14th century
Sheath
The lower part of a knife sheath with impressed and embossed decoration. The front is heavily decorated whilst the back has simple impressed lines. The front has two panels of decoration reflecting the handle and blade areas. The handle area has two rectangular panels framed by impressed lines. Both contain an impressed lion passant with an embossed body - the leather has been pushed up from behind to create a raised image. There are no traces of any leather fragments at the back that may have been used to help raise up these areas, but most of the flesh surface is gone from the back and there is no sign of any lining that may have held such pieces in place. The blade area has a vertical row of lozenges each containing an animal, such as a rabbit (the others are incomplete or too worn to identify). The sheath had a centre back seam with flesh/grain stitch holes and there are the remains of four suspension slots, two one either side of the seam.
