Scabbard

Part of a leather sword scabbard, decorated on front and back. The front is decorated with impressed interlace and zoomorphic motifs and the decoration is divided into two sections reflecting the handle and blade areas. All of the handle area survives but only the upper part of the blade section. The former has interlace motifs and the latter has a winged dragon with linear and stabbed dot decoration. The back is decorated with impressed herringbone pattern and there is a centre back seam with edge/grain stitchholes. The mouth of the scabbard appears complete and there are a series of suspension slots close to it on the back and a single hole on the front. The lower end has been cut off but there are secondary stitch holes running along parallel to this cut edge, perhaps indicating that this is a larger scabbard that has been cut down for re-use as a dagger sheath.
