Saxon & Medieval — Saxo-Norman; 10th-11th century
Sheath
Two fragments from the upper (handle) portion of a leather sheath with an edge seam. The front is decorated with a panel of impressed interlace with a frame of ring-and-dot stamped motifs. The back has a panel containing an impressed lattice design with stamped ring-and-dot motifs within some of the lattice. This was probably used for a seaxe knife and it is likely that the sheath was originally worn horizontally across the body.
The decoration is similar to a sheath from Fishamble Street, Dublin (Cameron, 2007, 71, fig 25, no. DLS 11). This sheath has been published in Pritchard 1991, 211, fig 3.94 and in an earlier note in the Antiquaries Journal (Dunning, 1932, vol 12, issue 2, Sprint 1932, 177).
