Post-Medieval — Tudor; 16th century
Scabbard
Complete plain leather sword scabbard. The top opening has flesh/grain stitch holes along its edge and there is a single small hole close to the top edge on the front. There is a boss or ridge which protrudes from the front c. 41mm from the top edge, a feature noted on other scabbards of this period (ie scabbards from the Mary Rose). The seam is slightly open at the tip and there is some damage to the leather here possibly indicating the presence at one time of a chape. There is a centre back seam with flesh/grain stitch holes.
The ridge would have helped to prevent the loops that suspended the scabbard from the belt from coming off and is found on examples from the Mary Rose, sunk in 1545 (for example, scabbard 81A1734 (Hildred et al, 2011, 795)).
