Saxon & Medieval — Early Medieval; late 12th century-14th century
Sheath
Leather sheath for a small knife. The sheath has an extension or wing to one side of the upper part, which has two suspension slots. Both the front and back of the sheath are decorated with impressed decoration, which is divided into two zones reflecting the handle and blade areas. The front is decorated with a stag and a possible dog, perhaps indicating that this sheath was used for a hunting knife. The back has panels of closely spaced diagonal lines. The back has a centre back seam with edge/grain stitch holes.
