Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval; late 15th century
Unidentified badge
Part of a flat, circular badge with a foliate border. In the centre is part of a bust of a king or queen – a section of a pointed crown and hair can still be seen. There is a small loop at the top which may be a stitching loop for sewing the badge onto clothing or a suspension loop. This badge may be a pilgrim badge but if so, the shrine it came from is currently unknown. Pilgrims who travelled to religious shrines frequently bought souvenirs of their pious journey such as ampullae (small bottles for holy water), badges and figurines.
