Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval; 15th century
Sheath
A large leather knife or dagger sheath. Plain and undecorated with a centre back seam with flesh/grain stitch holes. There are some small stitch holes close to the top edge of the sheath, the thread impressions indicating whip stitching of the edge. These may indicate where an edging or fitting was attached. There are two large circular holes on either side near the point. These may indicate where a chape was attached but there is no wear on the surface of the leather indicating the presence of a chape. This sheath may be a cut down sword scabbard reused.
