Saxon & Medieval — Medieval; 13th century-14th century
Sheath
Incomplete leather knife sheath (the tip is missing) with impressed decoration on front and back. The front has a panel of two crescents with stabbed dotted decoration with a heraldic shield below with three chevrons. The back has panels of crescents with stabbed dotted decoration and what appears to be a moulded second small integral sheath. No lining or secondary sheath survives inside, so this may be a purely decorative moulding. The seam is on the side with edge/grain stitch holes. there are four suspension slots at the back.
This sheath was recovered in the early 1980s from the spoil tip for the archaeological excavations at old Billingsgate fish market on Lower Thames Street in the City of London.
