Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval; late 15th century
St Osmund
Pilgrim badge from the shrine of St Osmund in Salisbury Cathedral. This circular badge depicts the head of St Osmund wearing his bishop’s mitre. Osmund was William the Conqueror’s chancellor and was appointed Bishop of Salisbury in 1078. After his burial in 1099 Osmund’s remains were associated with various miracles. After many delays he was finally declared a saint in 1457 and his remains were put into a new shrine which attracted lots of pilgrims. Pilgrims who travelled to religious shrines frequently bought souvenirs of their pious journey such as ampullae (small bottles for holy water), badges and figurines.
