Post-Medieval — Mid 17th century; 1648-1673; 1666
The Crown
Philip Carterett issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business in White Hart Yard.
Boyne & Williamson (1899) reference London number 3490; Obv inscription: PHILLIP.CARTERETT (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A crown and P.S.C. (triad of initials in Roman capitals below sign, in field); Rev: IN.WHITE.HART.YARD.1666 (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALFE / PENNY (in three lines of Roman capitals, in field).
White Hart Yard can be attributed to a number of places, within Westminster, Stepney and Holborn, in Middlesex, and areas in Surrey, the exact site from which this trade token originated is unknown, though it is likely to have been in High Holborn, see token number 9333 in the Sylloge of Coins of the British Isles, 62, The Norweb Collection: Tokens of the British Isles 1575-1750, Part VIII - Middlesex and Uncertain Pieces.
