Museum of London Archaeology Service — Saxo-Norman; 11th century
Leather, shoe
Large adult drawstring shoe, one of the largest found on the site at No. 1 Poultry. The shoe is stitched together with leather thongs. The sole is heavily worn and there is a hole at the big toe point. The shoe has been repaired with a patch underneath. Medieval shoes were made by 'cordwainers' (the word comes from 'cordwain', or 'cordovan', the name for the leather made in Córdoba, Spain).
