Leather, shoe
The wear on this leather shoe shows that the owner suffered from 'hammer toe', where the toes are permanently curled down in a clawed position. This condition is often caused by wearing narrow or pointed shoes so the 14th century fashion for wearing pointed shoes may have damaged the wearer's feet by forcing their toes to bend and turn inwards. The shoe has worn away underneath the foot as a result. A hole has also been cut into the upper, probably to relieve pressure on the swellings above the damaged toe joints.
